Training:
This activity allows the child to practice memorization of addition facts.
- Charts 3, 4, 5, and 6 (the blind chart)
- A basket of folded slips on which the addition combinations are written. E.g. 1 + 1 = all the way to 9 + 9 =
- A box of loose tablets containing the results of all the addition
- Introduce the Addition Chart 3 to the child.
- Show the child the blue numbers on the horizontal axis and the red numbers on the vertical axis.
- Have the child choose a strip from the basket.
- Have the child read the equation out loud. Such as 5 + 3
- Show the child how to place one finger on the red 5 (on the vertical axis) and another finger on the blue 3 (on the horizontal axis). Slide your fingers until they meet which will give you the answer.
- Say out loud, “5 + 3 = 8”
- Have the child choose a slip and do as you have just shown.
- Do a few more examples.
- Once the child understands what to do with his fingers, have him write the equation he chooses from the basket and record the answer.
Exercice
The child can work alone or with another child.
Done the same way as Presentation 1. The hand movements are slightly different:
- Have the child choose a slip, such as 8 + 4 =
- Place your left index finger on the 8.
- Place your right index finger on the 4.
- Slide your two fingers to the right to the same distance to where your right index finger can no longer move forward.
- Slide your right index finger down to meet your left finger. (This should be on 12.)
- Say, “8 + 4 = 12”
- Have the child do a few until he understand the hand movements.
- Have the child record the equation with the answer.
Note
Always place your left index finger on the largest number in the equation.
Exercice
The child works alone or with another child.
Done the same way as Presentation 1. The hand movements are slightly different:
- Have the child choose a slip, such as 6 + 2 =
- Place your left index finger on the 6.
- Place your right finger on the 2.
- Slide your fingers to the right as far as each can go. (Your left index finger will therefore go further to the right than your left index finger.
- As if going up and down stairs, move your fingers until they meet.
- Say with the child, “6 + 2 = 8”
- Repeat until the child is comfortable with the hand movement.
- Then have the child record the equation and answer.
Exercice
The child can work alone or with another child.
- Have the child take out the tablets and place them in numerical order to the left of the chart. (Doing this will show the child the pattern of the chart’s numbers.)
- Have the child choose a slip and read it out loud. 7 + 4 =
(The child should know the answer) - Have the child place his fingers as in Presentation 1.
- Have the child place the correct tablet (the 11 tablet) on the spot where his fingers meet.
- Have the child repeat for each slip he takes out.
Note
There is no recording for this chart.
Exercice
The child works alone or with another child.
Direct
The memorization of the essential combinations in addition. The various charts give the possibility of repetition, which helps to fix these in the memory of the child.
The charts themselves are the control of error.
Chart 3 will correct chart 6 (the blind chart)
5 1/2 - 6 years
From time to time, ask the child if he knows that answer before looking it up on the charts.
